Heroes of the Storm - Sonya Guide by WarpStatus

Been seeing a lot of hate on Sonya so I thought I would try to share my thoughts on her and any tips I have to help people when playing her.

Overview: I think she is a solid hero, but can be punished hard for any mistakes. Once you get used to her you can minimize a lot of these mistakes and she can be a force to be reckoned with.

I'm trying to condense this as much as possible. If you are interested in more I have a guide on herosfire that I recently completed.

Basic tips:
  1. Take boon of the ancients and I'm super serious when I say don't miss spears. If you miss make sure it hits something else instead.
  2. Don't take Sonya to mines. She is fine everywhere else. I don't like melee on mines because they have a hard time killing the golem if you have to defend.
  3. Ideal composition for Sonya. 1 tank/half tank 1 Support 1 Ranged damage dealer. This is to make sure all your specific roles are covered. She can fit into this type of comp well. Play her as a melee assassin.
  4. Don't be afraid to all in, but know when to engage. Sometimes you will make a mistake and you can't get out. Don't flail around and instead do as much damage as possible. You'd be surprised how often you win or set-up a kill for a nearby teammate.
  5. Always pre build rage before any fights. Use spears on creeps, with the boon talent the cooldown is pretty short. If you need rage to clear end WW early to spear or auto creeps to get rage to full again.
  6. If you picked Sonya early and no one on your team picks a tank all is not lost. Instead take block, boon, ferocious healing and change your mindset to a tank. Protect, don't dive. Soak damage when your allies can deal damage to opponents safely and heal back up with ferocious and ww. You still do decent damage so be sure to help your team burst any enemies that overextend.
  7. When dealing with melee opponents, kite them while slamming them to get time for your spear to come up again. You generally don't win toe-to-toe, but you can deal slam damage out of their melee range and use spear to recover rage. Also head toward creeps for ww. Using these methods you can win against other melee.
  8. Dealing with ranged opponents its very easy to pretend you are fleeing, get them to chase you because they will walk in a straight line directly toward you. If you spear them at that point its harder for them to see coming and harder to dodge. Additionally try to engage them without spear (bush, run up on mount from a bush) that way when they use an escape you can just spear them.
Tips for allies playing with Sonya
If a Sonya is low and near a big creep wave, do not clear it with your super AOE. Let her heal up with it and help her finish it off if needed. Really good with azmodan because she can weaken the creeps for him to finish off.

Talents In general I think wrath of the berserker is the better ult. You can keep it up infinitely with autos and hitting every spear on CD. The damage it gives you makes you a real threat.

A good versatile build to start with is block, boon, poison spear, wotb, composite spear, nerves of steel, ignore pain. It makes you a really good duelist, good mobility, and has enough survivability to dish out a lot of damage. Once you get a hang of this playstyle it is best to determine talents with each game. Specifically the level 7 and 13 talents are very versatile depending on the situation. I think boon is almost a must take unless you have a specific team with a lot of cc. The mobility loss is too great without it.
